How many lights do I need for a Christmas tree?

As a guide, allow 50 to 100 LEDs for every 30cm of tree. That is 300 to 600 LEDs on a 180cm tree for a full look.

The 120 LED set on 12 metres gives a lighter wrap on a full sized tree. The 30M sets with 300 LEDs suit most trees, and the 50M multi function set with 500 LEDs suits a big one. Connectable sets can also be joined if one is not enough.

What are the best Christmas tree lights?

Connectable LED string lights, long enough to wrap the whole tree from one plug. The right set depends on whether you want steady light, effects, or no cable at all.

The 230V static string lights give a steady light with no controller. The 230V multi function string lights have eight settings and remember the last one used. The battery string lights suit a small tree away from a socket. The cluster garland packs 720 LEDs into 10 metres for a dense line of light.

Are low voltage Christmas tree lights better?

They are the easier choice where children and pets are about, because the wire carries low voltage from a plug top transformer rather than 230V mains.

The indoor low voltage sets carry 31V, as 10M with 100 LEDs or 30M with 300 LEDs, and are rated IP20 for indoor use only. The 30M low voltage static set runs through a 12W transformer and suits outdoor and indoor use, including a large tree in the garden.

Should Christmas tree lights be on black, green or white cable?

Match the cable to the tree. Dark green or black cable disappears into a green tree, and white cable disappears into a white tree.

The indoor low voltage sets are on dark green cable and the 120 LED set is on black cable. The white cable string lights come in clear white or blue, with 120 LEDs on 12 metres or 320 LEDs on 25.6 metres.

Can these lights go on an outdoor Christmas tree?

Some can. The 120 LED and white cable sets are IP44, and the 230V Yuletide sets and the 30M low voltage static set are suitable for outdoor and indoor use.

The indoor low voltage sets and the cluster garland are IP20, and the battery string lights are indoor only, so keep those on a tree inside. Outdoors, keep every plug joint dry in a weatherproof box.

Are LED lights safe on a real Christmas tree?

LEDs run cool, which makes them the safer choice among the branches of a real tree. They also draw a small fraction of the power of older filament sets.

Switch them off at night and when the house is empty, or put them on a plug in timer.
