Which portable heater is cheapest to run in Ireland?
Same wattage, same cost. At 38.04 cent per kWh, any 2000W space heater costs about 76 cent an hour at full power.
The maths: 2000W is 2kW, so one hour at full power uses 2 kWh, and 2 x 38.04 cent is 76.08 cent. The unit rate is the Electric Ireland 24 hour standard unit rate from 1 July 2026, including VAT. Check your own bill, as rates vary by supplier.
On their lowest settings the oil filled radiator (800W) costs about 30 cent an hour, the convector (750W) about 29 cent and the fan heater (1000W) about 38 cent. What is the difference between an oil filled radiator, a convector and a fan heater?
A fan heater warms fastest, a convector within minutes, and an oil filled radiator slowest, but it keeps radiating heat afterwards.
An oil filled radiator heats oil sealed inside its fins, and that stored heat keeps warming the room after the element cycles off, which suits a living room or bedroom used all evening. A convector heats the air and cools quickly once it switches off, which suits a home office or a spare room used for an hour or two. What size portable heater do I need?
Allow roughly 100 watts per square metre. On 2000W, the oil filled radiator and convector each suit rooms up to about 20 square metres.
Use the lower settings in smaller rooms, and go up a size in older, draughty rooms or rooms with high ceilings and large windows. An undersized heater runs flat out and never satisfies its thermostat, which is the most expensive way to run any heater. Are portable electric heaters safe to leave on?
Used properly, yes. All three have overheat protection, and the oil filled radiator adds a tip over switch that cuts power if knocked.
The convector adds a separate safety thermal cutout. Keep any portable heater clear of curtains and furniture, never use one to dry clothes, and do not leave it running unattended for long periods. The timer models of the oil filled radiator and the convector switch themselves off on schedule. Do plug in heaters need an electrician?
No. The oil filled radiator and fan heater plug into a standard socket. Wall mounting the convector, or fitting a bathroom heater, is different.
