What Are The Most Efficient Electric Radiators?

Every electric heater converts electricity to heat at effectively 100 percent efficiency at the point of use. So when people ask which electric radiator is the most efficient, the real question is which one wastes the least money in an Irish home. That comes down to three things: how well the heater holds and releases its heat, how precisely you can control when it runs, and whether you can shift any of the load onto cheaper night rate electricity.

This guide sets out the most efficient electric heaters for Irish homes and answers the questions people ask when searching for energy efficient electric heaters: which type wastes least, whether they are expensive to run, what each costs per hour at today's Irish unit rate, and which models we stock that get the controls right. Every heater named here comes with free delivery to every county in the Republic of Ireland from the first euro.

What are the most efficient electric heaters?

For rooms used for hours, an oil filled radiator with a digital thermostat, timer and open window detection. For short bursts, a panel or convector heater on a timer.

Efficiency in an electric heater is about waste, not the element. The most efficient electric heaters hold the room at the temperature you set, switch off when nobody is there and stop heating when a window is opened. In our range that is the Titan Smart WiFi Electric Radiator, an oil filled wall radiator with a 24 hour timer, weekly programming, open window detection and app control, and the ATC Almeria Eco panel heater, whose eco function reduces power once the room reaches temperature. The sections below explain why, and what each one costs to run.

Which type of electric heater is the most efficient?

Oil filled electric radiators with digital thermostats and timers are the most efficient for rooms used for hours at a time, because they keep radiating heat after the element switches off.

An oil filled electric radiator on castors warming a cosy Irish living room in winter, beside an armchair with a throw
An oil filled radiator keeps giving out heat after the element switches off, which is what makes it economical over a long evening.

The oil inside acts as a heat store. The element heats the oil, the oil heats the room, and when the thermostat cuts power the radiator keeps giving out warmth for a long time afterwards. Over an evening in a living room, that stored heat means the element spends less time drawing power than a heater that goes cold the moment it clicks off.

Panel heaters and convector heaters are more efficient for short bursts. They heat the air directly and reach temperature quickly, so for a home office used for two hours or a bathroom warmed before a shower, a fast heater used briefly beats a slow one left on. The least efficient option in any room is the heater with no thermostat at all, running flat out regardless of temperature.

Are there energy efficient electric heaters?

Yes, but not because of the element. Every electric heater turns nearly all its electricity into heat. Energy efficient electric heaters waste less of it through better controls.

Two 1500W heaters make the same heat for the same electricity while their elements are on. The difference is how many hours the element is on. A heater with an accurate electronic thermostat, a timer and an eco or open window function spends far fewer hours at full power than a basic model with a dial, so it costs less over a winter. When a heater is sold as energy efficient, check which of those controls it actually has.

What features actually cut the running cost?

A precise digital thermostat, a programmable timer and open window detection do more for your bill than any difference between heater brands.

The thermostat is the big one. A radiator holding 19 degrees cycles its element on and off and can spend well over half its time drawing nothing. A timer stops the second biggest waste, which is heating rooms nobody is in. Open window detection, fitted on the Titan Smart WiFi Electric Radiator, pauses heating when it senses a sudden temperature drop instead of pouring heat out an open window. WiFi app control ties it together by letting you run each room on its own schedule from your phone.

How much does an electric radiator cost to run in Ireland?

At Electric Ireland's standard rate of 38.04 cent per kWh, a 1000W radiator costs about 38 cent for each hour the element is actually heating.

The maths is wattage in kW x hours x unit rate. The rate used is the Electric Ireland 24 hour standard unit rate from 1 July 2026, 38.04 cent per kWh including VAT. While the element is drawing full power: a 600W radiator costs about 23 cent an hour, 900W about 34 cent, 1200W about 46 cent, 1500W about 57 cent and 2000W about 76 cent. Real usage is lower because the thermostat cycles the element once the room is at temperature. If you have a smart meter or night rate tariff, running an oil filled radiator in the hour before bed on cheap rate units cuts the effective cost again.

Are electric radiators expensive to run?

Not per hour. A 1000W radiator costs about 38 cent for each hour its element is heating. They get expensive when they are the wrong size or left running uncontrolled.

As a worked example, a 1200W radiator used for four hours an evening can cost at most 1.2 x 4 x 38.04 cent, about €1.83, if the element never switches off. Over a 30 day month that ceiling is about €55. In practice the thermostat cycles the element off once the room is warm, so the real figure is lower. The bills that shock people come from heating a whole house on direct electric heat, or from an undersized heater that runs flat out all day.

Do electric oil heaters use a lot of electricity?

No more than any heater of the same wattage. An oil filled radiator only draws power while its element is on, and the stored heat keeps the room warm afterwards.

Take the Titan 2kW Oil Filled Radiator, which has three settings. At 38.04 cent per kWh an hour at full power costs about 30 cent on 800W, 46 cent on 1200W and 76 cent on 2000W. Its adjustable thermostat switches the element off once the room is at temperature, and the oil keeps giving out heat while it is off, so a lower setting with the thermostat doing the work is usually the cheapest way to run it.

Does the right size matter for efficiency?

Yes, more than most buyers expect. An undersized radiator runs flat out constantly and never satisfies its thermostat, which is the most expensive way to run any heater.

Allow roughly 100 watts per square metre of floor area, and go up a size in older or draughty rooms. A correctly sized radiator reaches temperature and settles into economical cycling. Our guide on what size electric radiator you need works through it room by room.

Is an electric radiator cheaper to run than gas or oil heating?

Per unit of heat, electricity costs more than gas or oil. Electric radiators win on control, heating only the rooms you use instead of the whole house.

Running one 1200W radiator for the one room you occupy costs far less than firing a boiler and pumping every radiator in the house. That is why electric radiators suit home offices, extensions, garden rooms and any home where most rooms sit empty most of the day. They also need no boiler service, no flue and no plumbing.

What is the cheapest electric heater to run in Ireland?

The one sized correctly for the room, with a thermostat and timer. Per hour at full power, cost follows wattage, not heater type.

A 2000W oil filled radiator, a 2000W convector and a 2000W fan heater all cost about 76 cent an hour at full power at 38.04 cent per kWh. What differs is how long each needs to run to keep a room warm. Our oil filled radiator vs convector vs fan heater running cost guide works through every setting on three portable heaters we stock. If you are on a day and night meter, the same Electric Ireland price announcement lists a night rate of 20.03 cent per kWh, so a 1000W heater running on night rate units costs about 20 cent an hour.

What are the most efficient electric panel heaters?

Panel heaters with a precise electronic thermostat and programmable timer, such as the Titan WiFi panel heater and the ATC Almeria Eco.

The ATC Almeria Eco adds an eco function that reduces power once the room reaches temperature, open window technology and up to four program times a day. The Titan Electric Panel Heater with WiFi Control puts its thermostat and timer on your phone through the Tuya Smart app. Both are in our wall mounted electric heaters range.

What is the most efficient wall mounted electric heater?

For rooms used for hours, an oil filled wall radiator with app control and open window detection, such as the Titan Smart WiFi radiator.

Its oil filled body keeps radiating after the element cycles off, the app runs each room on its own schedule, and open window detection pauses heating when it senses a sudden temperature drop. For rooms used in short bursts, a panel heater on a timer does the job for less upfront.

The most efficient options we stock

For whole room heating on a schedule, the Titan Smart WiFi Electric Radiator combines an oil filled body with app control, a 24 hour timer and open window detection, in five sizes from 600W to 1800W. For fast heat in smaller rooms, the Titan Electric Panel Heater with WiFi Control gives the same scheduling in a slim panel. For a portable option with no installation, the Titan 2kW Oil Filled Radiator wheels between rooms and holds its heat long after switch off.
