What is emergency lighting for?

Emergency lighting comes on automatically when the normal supply fails, so people can see the escape route and get out of the building safely.

Each fitting carries its own battery, so it does not depend on the circuit that has just failed. The battery charges continuously while the mains is healthy and takes over the moment it is lost, whether that is a power cut, a tripped device or a fire damaging the wiring.

In Ireland the standard for emergency lighting in buildings is I.S. 3217, and the installation itself sits under I.S. 10101. What a particular building needs, how many fittings, where they go and for how long they must run, comes from the fire safety design for that building and should be specified by a competent person rather than estimated from a product page.

What is the difference between maintained and non maintained emergency lighting?

A maintained fitting is lit all the time and stays lit when the power fails. A non maintained fitting is off during normal use and only comes on when the supply is lost.

Exit signs are usually maintained, because the sign is only useful if people can see it before anything goes wrong. Escape route lighting is commonly non maintained, so the fitting sits dark until it is needed, which saves energy and lamp life.

Which one a position needs is part of the emergency lighting design, not a preference. If you are replacing like for like, match what is already there unless the design says otherwise.

How long does emergency lighting have to stay on?

Three hours is the common requirement in Irish premises, though one hour applies in some cases. The duration for your building comes from its fire safety design.

The rated duration is what the battery must deliver at the end of its life, not when it is new, which is why a fitting that lights up during a test is not the same as a fitting that passes a duration test. That difference is the reason the full discharge test exists.

What is a self test emergency light?

A self test fitting runs its own function and duration tests automatically and shows the result on an indicator, so you are not walking the building flicking test keys.

I.S. 3217 requires regular testing and a written record. A short function test is typically done monthly and a full duration test annually, and on a manual system somebody has to isolate every fitting, time it and write it all down. Self test fittings run the same tests on a schedule and flag a failure, which cuts the labour considerably on anything bigger than a small unit. The log still has to be kept.

What is in the range?

Buying more than one, or fitting out a whole premises?

Emergency lighting is almost never bought one at a time. If you are fitting out a unit, a commercial premises, a block or a site, send us the schedule or the fitting count and we will price it in one go. Trade pricing is set by the quantity rather than published, so it costs nothing to ask.

You do not need to be an electrician to be quoted either: we price for builders, landlords, letting agents, property managers and facilities managers as well. Request a trade quote, open a trade account, or ring 01 401 9907.

Common questions

Q: Where can I buy emergency lights and exit signs in Ireland?
A: From Shamrock Electrical at shamrockelectrical.ie, with free delivery to every county in the Republic of Ireland and no minimum spend, or over the trade counter at Greenogue Business Park, Rathcoole, Co. Dublin. Prices start at €36.74 for an IP65 emergency bulkhead.

Q: What is the difference between maintained and non maintained emergency lighting?
A: A maintained fitting is lit during normal use and stays lit when the supply fails. A non maintained fitting is off in normal use and only illuminates on failure. Exit signs are usually maintained and escape route lighting is commonly non maintained.

Q: How long must emergency lighting stay lit in Ireland?
A: Three hours is the common requirement, with one hour applying in some cases. The duration for a specific building comes from its fire safety design under I.S. 3217 and should be confirmed by a competent person.

Q: What is a self test emergency light?
A: A fitting that runs its own function and duration tests automatically and indicates the result, instead of needing someone to isolate and time each fitting by hand. It saves significant labour on larger premises, though the test log still has to be kept.

Q: How often does emergency lighting need to be tested?
A: Under I.S. 3217 a short function test is typically carried out monthly and a full duration test annually, with a written record kept. Self test fittings carry out the tests themselves and flag failures.

Q: Do I need an electrician to install emergency lighting?
A: Yes. Emergency lighting is wired into the installation and must be installed and certified by a registered electrical contractor under I.S. 10101, and the layout and duration should follow the emergency lighting design for the building.

Q: Can I get trade prices on emergency lighting?
A: Yes. Trade pricing is set by the quantity rather than published, so send the schedule or fitting count and we will price the job. You do not need to be an electrician: we quote for builders, landlords, letting agents, property managers and facilities managers too.

Q: Do you deliver emergency lighting outside Dublin?
