What size bathroom mirror do I need?
As a general rule the mirror should be no wider than the vanity unit or basin beneath it, and ideally centred on it. Slightly narrower looks deliberate, wider looks like a mistake.
For a single basin, a mirror between 600 and 700mm wide suits most Irish bathrooms. For a double vanity you have a choice: one wide mirror reads cleaner, two matching mirrors give each person their own and handle an off centre basin better. In a small ensuite a 600mm circular mirror often works where a rectangle would feel heavy.
How high should a bathroom mirror be hung?
Centre the mirror at roughly eye level for the people using it, which usually puts the middle around 1.5 to 1.6 metres from the floor, with a gap of 100 to 200mm above the basin or splashback.
Eye level is the thing that matters, not a fixed measurement, so if the household differs a lot in height, favour the taller person and choose a taller mirror rather than hanging it high. Keep the bottom edge clear of taps and the splashback so water is not running down the glass.
What is a demister pad and do I need one?
A demister is a heated pad behind the glass that keeps the mirror above the temperature at which steam condenses, so it stays clear while you use the room.
In an Irish bathroom it is one of the most worthwhile features on the list, because the temperature difference between a hot shower and a cold wall is exactly what causes misting, and our climate makes that a daily event rather than an occasional one. Every LED bathroom mirror in this range includes anti fog heating. Without one you are wiping the mirror every morning.
What IP rating does a bathroom mirror need?
IP44 is the normal rating for a bathroom mirror, meaning it is protected against splashing water from any direction. That covers a mirror above a basin or on a bathroom wall.
Bathrooms are divided into zones under the wiring rules, and a mirror inside a shower enclosure or directly over a bath needs a higher rating than IP44. The mirrors here are IP44 and are intended for the wall above a basin, not for inside a shower. If you are unsure which zone your wall falls into, ask your electrician before ordering.
Do LED bathroom mirrors need an electrician?
Yes. A mains connected LED mirror must be wired by a registered electrician, because bathroom electrical work in Ireland has to comply with the wiring rules.
The mirror itself is straightforward to hang once the supply is in place. The practical advice is to decide on the mirror before the electrician first fixes, so the cable comes out in the right position behind the glass. Retrofitting a supply to a tiled wall afterwards is the expensive way to do it. Plug in vanity mirrors are a different case and need no wiring at all.
What is the difference between a bathroom mirror and a vanity mirror?
A bathroom mirror is wall mounted, mains wired and IP rated for a wet room. A vanity mirror sits on a dressing table, plugs into a socket and is not rated for bathroom use.
The distinction matters because a Hollywood style vanity mirror is typically IP20, which means no protection against water, and it should not be installed in a bathroom. If you want the Hollywood look in a bathroom, the answer is a lit bathroom mirror with the correct rating rather than a dressing table mirror on a shelf.
