What type of plug socket does Ireland use?

Ireland uses the three rectangular pin, 13 amp fused plug and socket, often called Type G, the same system as the UK. The mains supply is 230V at 50Hz.

Every standard socket in this range takes that plug. European two round pin plugs will not fit without an adaptor, and a travel adaptor is no substitute for a proper socket on an appliance that stays plugged in. If a room needs more outlets, adding a socket is safer than a chain of adaptors, and we always recommend a registered electrical contractor for the work.

What are the different types of plug sockets?

In an Irish home the main types are the standard 13A switched socket, the twin socket with USB charging, the 5A round pin lamp socket, the cooker control unit with a socket, the outdoor weatherproof socket and the metal clad socket.

• 13A double pole switched sockets, single or twin, switch both the live and the neutral.
• USB twin sockets, such as the twin socket with USB A and USB C and the twin socket with 2 USB ports, charge phones and tablets while keeping both 13A outlets free.
• The 5A 3 round pin socket is for table and floor lamps run from a lighting circuit, so the wall switch turns them on. It takes a 5A round pin plug, not a standard 13A plug.
• The 45A double pole cooker switch with a 13A socket isolates an electric cooker and gives a spare socket beside it, with neon indicators on both.
• Outdoor sockets: the single outdoor socket is IP66 with a lockable cover, and the double outdoor socket is IP56 with two switched outlets, for garden tools, outdoor lights and Christmas lights.
• The metal clad 2 gang double pole socket is built to BS 1363 Part 2 for garages, workshops and commercial spaces where a plastic plate would get knocked.
