Low voltage string lights run from a plug top transformer rather than straight off the mains, so the wire itself carries a low voltage. That makes them the easier choice around a tree in the garden, a hedge, a porch or anywhere children and pets are about. Join the sets together and a whole frontage runs from one socket.

Two lengths, three colours

The 10 metre set carries 100 LEDs and suits a doorway, a small tree or a window. The 30 metre set carries 300 LEDs and wraps a good sized garden tree or runs the length of a hedge. Warm white is the traditional choice, cool white is crisper and brighter, and multicolour is the one children ask for.

Getting the run right

Work out the length before you buy. A medium garden tree takes two of the 10 metre sets, a large one takes a 30 metre set on its own. Feed the first set from a properly installed outdoor socket and keep the transformer and any couplers off the ground, ideally inside a weatherproof connection box such as the DRiBOX. That is the part of an outdoor display that gives trouble in an Irish winter, not the lights.

Q: What is the advantage of low voltage over mains lights?
A: The transformer sits at the plug, so the wire running through the tree or along the hedge carries a low voltage rather than 230V. It is the safer option where the cable is within reach, and it is the usual choice for garden trees and anywhere children play.

Q: How many sets can I join?
A: Up to 1200 LEDs in one run, so twelve of the 100 LED sets or four of the 300 LED sets. All of it runs from a single socket.

Q: Can I mix colours in one run?
A: You can, and a warm white run with one multicolour set in a tree works well. Mixing warm white and cool white in the same run does not, the two whites clash badly once lit.

Q: Are they suitable for a real tree outdoors?
A: Yes, that is what they are best at. Start at the trunk and work out along the main branches rather than wrapping the outside of the tree, which is what gives depth once it is dark.

Q: Can I put them on a timer?
A: Yes. A plug in timer or a WiFi smart plug both work, and the WiFi versions let you change the schedule from your phone without going out to the socket.
