Q: What is a weatherproof connection box actually for?
A: It houses the joint between a plug and a socket, or a timer or transformer, so the connection itself is protected from rain and damp. An outdoor rated appliance is not much use if the plug it is connected to is sitting in a puddle.

Q: Is IP55 enough for outdoors in Ireland?
A: Yes for this purpose. IP55 means dust protected and shielded against low pressure water jets from any direction, which covers rain and wind driven damp. It is not designed to be submerged, so do not place it where water pools.

Q: Can I leave it out all year?
A: It is built for outdoor use and many people leave it in place through the winter. Site it on a surface where water drains away rather than collects, and keep the clamp closed.

Q: What fits inside it?
A: The interior is 330mm by 230mm by 140mm, which takes an extension block, a cable reel, a plug in timer or a low voltage transformer. There are 4 output channels so several cables can leave the box tidily.

Q: Do I need an electrician to use one?
A: No. It is not fixed wiring. You place it, put your connections inside and close the clamp. The socket you plug it into should of course be a properly installed outdoor socket, and that does need an electrician.

A: That is one of the reasons to use one. It puts the connection inside a closed enclosure rather than leaving plugs exposed on the ground.
