Light switches for Irish homes: satin chrome 2 way light switches with black inserts in 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 gang, plus IP66 outdoor switches for gardens, sheds and porches. Every switch here is 2 way, and free delivery applies to every order from the first euro, with no minimum spend.

What do gang and way mean on a light switch?

Gang is the number of switches on one plate. Way is the number of places that control the same light, so 2 way means two switches.

A 1 gang switch works one light or set of lights, a 3 gang works three from the same plate. A 2 way switch is what lets you turn the landing light on at the bottom of the stairs and off at the top. The satin chrome light switch is a 10A 2 way switch sold in 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 gang versions, so one design covers a single bedroom switch through to a 6 gang plate by a kitchen or hall door.

Can a 2 way switch be used as a 1 way switch?

Yes. A 2 way switch wired using two of its terminals works as an ordinary one way switch, so it suits almost any position in a house.

That means one switch type covers a light controlled from one place or from two. Intermediate switches, used for three or more control points on the same light, are a different part and are not in this range. Your electrician will confirm what an existing circuit needs before swapping plates.

Which light switch do I need outside?

An IP66 outdoor switch. IP66 means dust tight and protected against powerful jets of water, so it suits gardens, patios, sheds and porches.

The 1 gang 2 way outdoor IP66 switch and the 2 gang 2 way outdoor IP66 switch are 20 amp switches with a neon indicator, for controlling outdoor lighting and other outdoor circuits from a weatherproof plate. For what the numbers in an IP rating mean, read our guide to what IP rating you need.

Can I dim my lights with these switches?

No. These are on and off switches, not dimmers. Dimming needs a dimmer switch and, with LED lamps, bulbs marked as dimmable.

If you are replacing a dimmer with a standard switch, any of the gang options here will do the job as a plain on and off control. If you want to keep dimming, ask at the counter on 01 401 9907 or email sales@shamrockelectrical.ie before you order.

Do I need an electrician to change a light switch?

A like for like switch swap counts as minor electrical work, but it is still mains wiring, and Safe Electric advises using a Registered Electrical Contractor.

Safe Electric lists like for like replacements such as switches as minor works rather than restricted electrical works, and advises always using a Registered Electrical Contractor for electrical work in your home and asking for a completion certificate. New lighting circuits are restricted electrical work, which only a Registered Electrical Contractor can carry out and certify. You can find a registered electrician by county on the Safe Electric site.

Do you sell fan isolator switches?

Yes. We sell a satin chrome 10A 3 pole fan isolator switch with a black insert, to match the light switches in this range.

The satin chrome 10A 3 pole fan isolator switch isolates a bathroom or kitchen extractor fan so it can be switched off for cleaning or maintenance. It matches the satin chrome black insert switches and sockets, and like any fixed wiring it should be fitted by a registered electrician.
