USB sockets for Irish homes: 13A twin wall sockets with USB charging ports built into the faceplate, plus a plug in smart plug with USB-A and USB-C ports for rooms you would rather not rewire. Both wall sockets are satin chrome with black inserts, and free delivery applies to every order from the first euro, with no minimum spend.

What is a USB socket?

A USB socket is a standard 13A wall socket with USB charging ports built in, so phones and tablets charge without an adapter.

Both wall sockets in this range are 2 gang twin switched sockets, so you keep two full 13A outlets with their own switches and gain the USB ports on top. They come from the Claddagh Collection in satin chrome with black inserts, which matches the satin chrome light switches, so a kitchen, bedroom or home office can be finished in one style.

Should I choose USB-A or USB-C?

USB-C suits most newer phones and tablets, while USB-A suits older cables. A socket with one of each covers both without swapping leads.

The 13A 2 gang twin socket with USB-A and USB-C has one port of each type. The satin chrome 13A twin socket with 2 USB ports gives two charging ports. Check the cable your devices use before choosing, and pick the mixed socket if the household has a bit of everything.

Is there a USB socket that needs no wiring?

Yes. The OP-WFUSB plugs into an existing socket and adds USB-A and USB-C charging, with WiFi scheduling for the socket through an app.

The OP-WFUSB WiFi smart plug timer is rated 13A with both USB outputs at 5V 2.4A. The mains socket and the USB ports are controlled separately in the Smart Life app, so you can cut charging overnight while the socket keeps running, and it works with Alexa. It is the quick option for a rented home or a room where the wall socket is staying put.

Can I replace a normal socket with a USB socket?

Usually yes, but it is mains wiring, so have a registered electrician fit it and confirm the back box suits the new socket.

Safe Electric lists like for like replacements and adding a socket to an existing circuit as minor electrical works, but it still advises always using a Registered Electrical Contractor for electrical work in your home and asking for a completion certificate. You can find a registered electrician by county on the Safe Electric site. If a new circuit is needed, that is restricted electrical work, which only a Registered Electrical Contractor can carry out and certify.
