The best outdoor Christmas lights for an Irish house are LED sets with a stated outdoor rating, usually IP44, that join together on couplers and run from a proper outdoor socket, with every plug joint kept in a weatherproof box. Irish Decembers are wet rather than bitterly cold, so water is what ends most displays, not frost. This guide explains the ratings, which exterior Christmas lights suit eaves, windows, trees and lawns, how many sets you can join, and how to power them safely. Every product linked below is stocked by Shamrock Electrical, with free delivery across Ireland on every order from the first euro.

What makes a Christmas light safe to use outdoors?

An outdoor Christmas light needs a seal around its lamp holders and joins, so rain cannot reach live parts. The simplest check is an IP number on the box or the product page. IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, which covers lights hung on a wall, a hedge or a tree. No IP number and no outdoor statement means indoor only.

The lights are only half of it. The joint between the plug and the socket, or between two couplers, is almost never waterproof, and a joint lying in wet grass is the classic cause of a tripped circuit in the middle of December. Our guide to what IP rating you need explains the digits in more detail.

Which exterior Christmas lights suit which part of the house?

Pick the light by where it is going. Icicle lights hang from a straight edge, string lights wrap and drape, and spiked or free standing pieces sit on the ground.

Icicle lights for eaves, gutters and window heads

Icicle lights hang in drops of different lengths, which reads clearly from the road along a gutter line or a porch edge. Both icicle sets we stock are 5 metres long with 80 LEDs, in warm white or cool white.

IP44 rated, 8.8W, and up to 12 sets can be connected on the coupler system, so a long gutter run comes from one socket.

String lights for trees, hedges and railings

A long string light is the most flexible outdoor Christmas light. It wraps a tree trunk, drapes over a hedge, follows a railing or outlines a window frame.

How do you choose Christmas window lights?

Christmas window lights work two ways. From outside, run an icicle set along the window head or clip a string light around the frame, and treat it as any other outdoor display, with an outdoor rated set and a dry connection. From inside, a set hung behind the glass is sheltered from the rain, so the outdoor rating matters less, but keep the plug and lead away from curtains and radiators.

Curtain lights, a sheet of hanging LEDs sized to a window, give the fullest window effect, indoors or out.

Warm white or cool white Christmas lights?

Warm white Christmas lights give the soft, traditional glow that sits well against brick, render and stone, and they are the safe choice if you are unsure. Cool white is crisper with a blue tone, reads as more modern, and stands out strongly on a dark or grey house. Whichever you pick, keep one colour across the front of the house, because warm and cool sets side by side look mismatched. Both icicle sets come in either colour, and the 120 LED string light is clear white.

Cluster lights, which pack many LEDs onto short spurs for a dense look, follow the same rules outside: a stated outdoor rating and dry connections. Our outdoor range is icicle and string lights, which cover the same jobs on a house front.

How many Christmas light sets can you connect together?

Every connectable set has a maximum, printed on the product, because each extra set adds load to the first plug in the chain. Go over it and you risk overloading that first lead. For a longer run, take a second supply from another socket instead.

Light Length and LEDs Power Max sets joined Rating
5M 80 LED icicle lights 5m, 80 LEDs 8.8W 12 IP44
LED icicle Christmas lights 5m, 80 LEDs 8.8W 3 Outdoor and indoor use
120 LED string light, clear white 12m, 120 LEDs 17.4W 6 IP44

Figures are taken from each product's own specification. The two icicle sets look alike but have very different limits, so always go by the product you actually bought.

How do you power outdoor Christmas lights safely?

Run the display from a proper outdoor socket rather than a lead through a window or a back door that cannot close. The single outdoor socket is IP66 with a lockable cover, and the double outdoor socket is IP56 with switched outlets. A new outdoor socket must be installed by a registered electrician on a properly protected circuit.

Then keep the joints dry. The DRiBOX IP55 weatherproof box holds plugs, extension sockets, timers and transformers inside a sealed enclosure with a silicone seal, measuring 330mm by 230mm by 140mm. Add a timer so the lights come on at dusk and go off overnight: a plug in timer or a WiFi smart plug from our WiFi time switches range both work.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of Christmas lights are best for outside?

LED sets with a stated outdoor rating, ideally IP44 or better, that connect on couplers. Keep every plug and coupler joint in a weatherproof box. Warm white suits brick, stone and traditional houses, and cool white gives a crisper, modern look. Check the maximum number of sets that can be joined, which is printed on each product.

Can outdoor Christmas lights be left up all season?

Yes, if they are rated for outdoor use and the connections stay dry and off the ground. Wet plug joints usually fail before the lights. Use an outdoor socket rather than a lead through a window, and put plugs, couplers and timers in a weatherproof connection box such as the DRiBOX IP55.

How do I put Christmas lights on a window?

Outside, run icicle lights along the window head or clip a string light around the frame. Inside, the glass shelters any set from rain. Plan the power first. A window set run from an outdoor socket needs the same weatherproof connection box as any other outdoor display.

Are LED Christmas lights cheap to run?

Yes. Our 5 metre, 80 LED icicle sets draw 8.8W and the 12 metre, 120 LED string light 17.4W, far below old filament sets. LED sets use a fraction of the power of the filament lights they replace, so a display left on for an evening through December costs very little.

Do I need an electrician for outdoor Christmas lights?

Not for plug in lights used from an existing outdoor socket. A new outdoor socket or any fixed wiring needs a registered electrician. If the house has no outdoor socket yet, have one fitted on a properly protected circuit well before December.
