Junction boxes and weatherproof boxes for outdoor and damp locations: IP65 terminal junction boxes for fixed cable joints, and the DRiBOX IP55 connection box that keeps plugs, timers and transformers out of the rain. Free delivery applies to every order from the first euro, with no minimum spend.

What is a junction box used for?

A junction box encloses a cable joint so the connections are protected and cannot be touched. The IP65 boxes here come with strip connectors already fitted.

The IP65 terminal junction boxes are made for joints that leave a dry wall cavity and go somewhere damp, dusty or outdoors: garden lighting runs, outdoor sockets, shed and garage supplies, pump and sensor connections, and unheated spaces where condensation is likely. They have threaded knockouts for glands and a fast mounting clip, and come in black for soffits, fencing and dark render or white for painted walls.

What IP rating does an outdoor junction box need?

For a fixed cable joint outdoors, IP65 is a sound choice: dust tight and protected against water jets, provided every cable entry is properly glanded.

The second digit is the water protection. IP65 resists jets of water, while the IP55 rating on the DRiBOX means dust protected and shielded against low pressure water jets from any direction, which covers rain and wind driven damp but not being submerged. Neither box should sit where water pools. Our guide to what IP rating you need explains the numbers in full.

Does a junction box keep its IP rating once cables go in?

Only if it is sealed properly. Every entry must be glanded and the lid seal seated and screwed down evenly, or the rating is lost.

A knockout opened and left unglanded drops the whole enclosure to no rating at all, however good the box itself is. Use the threaded knockouts with glands sized for the cable, and check the lid gasket sits flat before the screws are tightened.

What is the difference between a junction box and a weatherproof connection box?

A junction box houses a permanent wired joint. A weatherproof connection box like the DRiBOX houses plugs, sockets and timers and needs no fixed wiring.

The DRiBOX IP55 large outdoor weatherproof electrical box measures 330mm by 230mm by 140mm inside, takes an extension block, a cable reel, a plug in timer or a low voltage transformer, and has 4 output channels so several cables leave tidily. It closes with a locking clamp, no screws, behind a silicone weather seal, and suits Christmas lights, fountains, garden tools and patio heaters.

Do I need an electrician to fit a junction box?

Yes for a junction box, because it forms part of the fixed wiring. No for the DRiBOX, which simply encloses plug connections.

Joining or extending cables is mains wiring work, and Safe Electric advises always using a Registered Electrical Contractor for electrical work in your home and asking for a completion certificate. You can find a registered electrician by county on the Safe Electric site. The DRiBOX needs no installation, but the outdoor socket it plugs into must be properly installed, and that does need an electrician. Cable and conduit are counter only lines, so call 01 401 9907 or email sales@shamrockelectrical.ie for those.
