Every outdoor event eventually tests the same thing: whether whoever set up the electrical infrastructure actually knew what they were doing. A generator arrives, the power flows, and within the hour something trips — or a cable becomes a hazard across a walkway. The problem is rarely the generator. It's everything between the generator and the equipment: the sockets, the cable, the protection, the connections.
This guide is for event companies, marquee hirers, and corporate event builders who want to get it right the first time — the electrical supplies you need, what each item does, and where to get them in Ireland.
What electrical supplies do you need for an outdoor event?
The core outdoor event electrical kit includes: IP-rated sockets (minimum IP44, ideally IP65 or above), H07RN-F heavy-duty rubber cable, CEE industrial plugs and sockets for high-load connections, portable RCD units on every circuit, cable ramps for any ground-level runs across walkways, weatherproof junction boxes for outdoor cable connections, and IP65 LED floodlights for site lighting.
For a small outdoor gathering with one or two circuits, a pair of IP65 sockets and an RCD on the supply will usually be sufficient. For a marquee event with separate catering, AV, and lighting circuits, you need a more structured approach — CEE distribution, dedicated RCD protection per circuit, and cable ramps wherever cables cross a pedestrian route.
The supplies you can purchase from Shamrock Electrical cover most of this list. Items such as CEE plugs, H07RN-F cable, RCDs, and cable ramps are available in-store at our Rathcoole branch — contact the team on 01 401 9907 or sales@shamrockelectrical.ie to discuss what you need.
IP ratings explained: what IP44, IP65, and IP66 mean for events
Why IP rating matters outdoors
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings define how well an electrical enclosure resists dust and water. The first digit covers solid particles; the second covers moisture. Outdoors — where kit gets rained on, dragged across wet grass, and used event after event — the IP rating is the difference between a socket that fails mid-set and one that shrugs off an Irish summer evening.
Which IP rating to use for each application
| Application | Minimum IP rating |
|---|---|
| Outdoor sockets — exposed positions | IP65 |
| Junction boxes — temporary connections outdoors | IP55 or above |
| Extension leads — outdoor use | IP44 |
| Floodlight housings | IP65 |
| Ground-level cable connectors | IP67 |
IP44 provides splash protection from any direction — acceptable for light use with cover. IP65 means dust-tight and protected against water jets from any direction, which is the standard for outdoor event sockets. IP66 and IP67 add resistance to heavy rain and brief immersion — more than enough for any outdoor event in Ireland.
The 7 pieces of kit every event company should carry
Build your event kit box around these seven items and you'll have a clean, safe, weatherproof temporary power setup for any size of event.
1. CEE industrial plugs and sockets
The blue, round, locking connectors used on professional events and construction sites. Available in 16A and 32A versions, they provide secure, weatherproof connections between a distribution board and your power supply. CEE plugs and sockets are available in-store — call 01 401 9907 or email sales@shamrockelectrical.ie for current stock.
2. IP65 outdoor sockets
For point-of-use connections — lighting rigs, AV equipment, catering gear — you need outdoor sockets rated for direct exposure. Our double outdoor socket has an IP66 rating, a robust housing, and is suited to permanent or temporary outdoor installation.
Double Outdoor Socket
IP66 rated, twin-gang, weatherproof outdoor socket. Suitable for outdoor event installations.

Standard PVC cable is not designed for outdoor use — it stiffens in the cold and cracks under repeated handling. H07RN-F is a heavy-duty rubber-sheathed cable built for outdoor and temporary installation: flexible, UV-resistant, and rated for the kind of treatment event kit takes. Available in-store in a range of sizes and lengths — call 01 401 9907 or email us for pricing.
4. Portable RCD units
Every circuit at an outdoor event should have RCD protection. Portable plug-in RCDs allow you to add that protection to any supply point, even where the upstream supply is not already RCD-protected. Available in-store — contact our Rathcoole team for current stock and specifications.
5. Cable ramps
Any cable that crosses a walkway, vehicle route, or public access area needs a cable ramp. This protects both the cable and the people walking over it. Yellow single-channel ramps are standard for events; multi-channel versions handle three or more cables in a single ramp. Available in-store — call 01 401 9907 to check stock before your next event.
6. Weatherproof junction boxes
Where cables need to be joined or branched outdoors, the connection point must be protected. A properly-rated weatherproof box keeps moisture out of connections that would otherwise fail or create a fault. The DRiBOX IP55 is designed for exactly this — it seals around cables entering from either side and is rated for outdoor use.

Site lighting does two jobs at an outdoor event: it keeps the site safe after dark and it creates atmosphere. IP65 LED floodlights are robust enough to leave out overnight, draw a fraction of the power of older halogen units, and provide enough output to light marquee entrances, car parks, and loading areas. Browse our full range of IP65 LED floodlights online, or call us if you need to discuss wattage for a specific application.
RCD protection: why it's non-negotiable at outdoor events
An RCD (Residual Current Device) monitors the live and neutral conductors of a circuit for any difference in current. If a fault develops — including contact with water — it detects the leakage and cuts power within 30 milliseconds. At outdoor events where cables, connectors, and equipment are exposed to rain and damp ground, RCD protection on every circuit is the single most important safety measure you can put in place.
In Ireland, temporary electrical installations at outdoor events fall under the remit of IS 10101 and event organisers carry a legal duty of care to everyone on site. RCD protection is a baseline requirement, not a precaution you take when you have time. If a site inspection or insurance claim ever goes against you, an unprotected circuit will be the first thing noted in any report.
For small setups, a portable RCD adaptor on the incoming supply will cover a single circuit. For larger events with multiple distribution points, each circuit should have its own dedicated protection. Our team can advise on the right configuration — call 01 401 9907 to discuss your event layout.
Buying vs hiring: what's worth owning for outdoor events
For event companies running more than a handful of events per year, ownership of core electrical kit makes financial sense very quickly. A cable ramp that costs a modest amount in-store gets used on dozens of events — hiring the same item repeatedly accumulates charges that dwarf the purchase price within a season.
Worth owning: IP65 sockets, H07RN-F cable in commonly-used lengths, RCDs, cable ramps, weatherproof junction boxes. These are low-cost, long-lived items that form the backbone of any temporary power setup.
Worth hiring: Generators and large distribution boards for single large events where the capital outlay isn't justified by frequency of use.
Building a dedicated event electrical kit box means you stop paying hire charges for the basics and arrive on site knowing exactly what you have. Our team at Rathcoole can help you put together the right kit list for the type of events you run — whether that's a recurring outdoor market or a one-off corporate build.
