On an Irish outdoor display it is almost never the lights that fail. It is the plug, the coupler or the timer sitting in wet grass. The DRiBOX puts that connection inside a sealed box so the joint stays dry from November through to the take down in January.

The 285mm, and when to size up

This is the smaller of the two DRiBOX sizes. It takes a plug and a coupler, or a plug and a plug in timer, which covers most garden and Christmas light setups. If you are housing an extension block, a cable reel or a low voltage transformer, take the 330mm instead.

Using it properly

Site it where water drains away rather than collects, never in a hollow or on a path that puddles. Bring the cables in through the channels at either end and close the clamp. It is not fixed wiring and needs no electrician, though the outdoor socket you run it from does.

Q: What is it actually for?
A: It houses the join between a plug and a socket, or a timer or transformer, so that connection is out of the rain. An outdoor rated light set is little use if the plug feeding it is lying in a puddle.

Q: Is IP55 enough for an Irish winter?
A: For this purpose yes. IP55 is dust protected and shielded against water jets from any direction, which covers rain and wind driven damp. It is not made to be submerged, so do not site it where water pools.

Q: Should I get the 285mm or the 330mm?
A: The 285mm takes a plug and a coupler or a plug and a timer. The 330mm takes an extension block, a cable reel or a transformer. If in doubt about a bulky item, take the larger one.

Q: Do I need an electrician?
A: Not for the box. You place it, put the connection inside and close the clamp. The outdoor socket itself does need to be properly installed.

Q: Is it safe with children and pets about?
A: That is one of the main reasons to use one. The connection sits inside a closed enclosure rather than exposed on the ground.
