Do I need permission to install CCTV at my home in Ireland?

Not for a camera that only covers your own property. If it captures a public path, a road or a neighbour's garden, data protection obligations can apply to you as the operator.

Domestic CCTV covering only your own home and garden generally falls under the household exemption in data protection law. Once the camera routinely records beyond your boundary, that exemption may no longer apply and you may be treated as a data controller, with duties around signage, retention and access requests. The Data Protection Commission publishes guidance on domestic CCTV, and it is worth reading before you mount anything pointing at a shared driveway or a footpath. The simple practical step is to angle the camera down and inward so it sees your property and not the street.

What is the difference between a WiFi camera and a wired system?

A WiFi camera is quick to fit and needs only power. A wired system runs cable to each camera and a recorder, which is more work but far more reliable.

WiFi suits one or two cameras near the house where the signal is strong. It depends on your broadband and your router, so a camera at the end of a long garden or behind a thick wall will drop out. A wired multi camera system with its own recorder keeps working when the internet does not, stores footage locally, and does not compete with everything else on your network. If you are covering a whole property or you want footage you can rely on, wired is the better answer.

Do security cameras work at night?

Yes. Most use infrared for black and white night vision. Better models add a spotlight for full colour at night, which matters if you ever need to identify somebody.

Infrared gives you the shape of what happened. Colour gives you the detail that makes footage useful, a jacket colour, a registration plate, a vehicle. If the camera is covering an entrance where identification is the point, colour night vision is worth paying for. If it is watching a shed door, infrared is fine.

What IP rating does an outdoor camera need?

IP65 or better for anything mounted outside. Below that, moisture will eventually get into the housing and the lens will fog or the electronics will fail.

Irish weather tests this harder than the specification sheets assume, because it is persistent damp rather than occasional heavy rain. Mount under an eave or a soffit where you can, both to shelter the unit and to keep spiders and cobwebs off the lens, which is the single most common cause of false motion alerts.

Where should I position a home security camera?

Cover the ways in rather than the whole garden. The front door, the back door and the driveway account for most of what matters. Mount at about 2.5 metres.

Too high and you record the tops of heads, which identifies nobody. Too low and the camera is easy to reach. Angle it so people approach across the frame rather than straight at it, which gives the motion detection more to work with and gives you a longer look at anybody arriving. Avoid pointing it directly at a bright light or into the sun, which will wash out exactly the moment you wanted.

Do security cameras need an electrician?

A plug in WiFi camera does not. Anything hardwired, mounted at height, or wired back to a recorder is work for a registered electrician.

The cameras themselves are low voltage, but getting power to an outdoor position usually is not, and an outdoor connection needs a weatherproof enclosure. If you are fitting a multi camera system, the cable routing is most of the job and it is worth having done properly the first time.
