SEAI EV Grant Cap Kicks In Next Thursday 31 July
From Thursday 31 July 2026, the SEAI €3,500 purchase grant for new battery electric vehicles will only apply to cars with a full price at or under a new upper price cap. Vehicles above the cap get zero grant. This is a meaningful narrowing of the scheme, which up to now applied broadly to most new BEVs on the Irish market.
What is not changing: The separate €300 SEAI home charger grant is unaffected. Domestic EV charger installation remains grant-supported, and the eligibility criteria for the homeowner (own the property, off-street parking, SEAI-registered installer) are the same as before.
What it means for you: Expect a rush of home charger enquiries in the next 10 days from customers trying to close out car purchases before the cap lands. After 31 July, the mix of EVs on Irish driveways shifts toward the cheaper end of the market, which means more single-phase 7.4kW installs and fewer of the premium three-phase jobs. Shamrock does not stock EV chargers, but every EV install pulls through a consumer unit review, a dedicated 32A RCBO, Type A or Type B RCD protection, SWA or 6mm² T&E, and often a CU upgrade. ESB Networks Tightens Connection Queue Rules for Larger Jobs
ESB Networks has updated its guidance for connection applications above the standard domestic threshold, part of the ongoing rollout of the CRU-approved €18.9bn PR6 investment programme covering 2026 to 2030. The practical change: applications for upgraded supply capacity (three-phase upgrades, farm buildings, workshops, small commercial units) now require more complete load calculations and single-line diagrams at submission stage. Incomplete applications are being returned rather than queued.
Why now: The pipeline is under pressure. PR6 targets connecting 1 million EVs and 680,000 heat pumps by 2030, and ESB Networks is trying to stop the queue clogging up with speculative or incomplete applications. Real jobs with complete paperwork move faster.
What it means for you: If you are doing three-phase upgrades, farm supply increases or small commercial connections this summer, tighten up your NC6 paperwork before submitting. A proper load schedule and single-line diagram now saves four to six weeks of back and forth. Also worth flagging to any customer waiting on a connection: quiet a rumour has been going around that PR6 money means faster connections. It does not. The money is going into transmission and substations, not into shortening the domestic connection queue in 2026.
⚖️ Compliance Update
Emergency lighting on commercial fit-outs, mid-summer reminder: July is peak retail and hospitality fit-out season with owners racing to be open for the August bank holiday weekend. A quick reminder on IS 3217 for emergency lighting in commercial premises:
- Escape route luminaires must provide minimum 1 lux at floor level along the centre line of the escape route
- Open area (anti-panic) lighting must provide minimum 0.5 lux at floor level excluding a 0.5m border
- Emergency luminaires must be positioned at each exit door, near each staircase, at each change of direction, and near first aid and fire fighting equipment
- Minimum duration is 3 hours for premises where the public are present
- Commissioning certificate and logbook must be handed over on completion

🌿 School Holidays, Empty Houses and the Security Lighting Sell
Late July is the single best week of the year to have the security lighting conversation with a domestic customer. Half the estate is in Salou. Break-in stats always climb in July and August. Gardaí quietly remind homeowners every summer that a well-lit exterior is the cheapest deterrent going. And crucially, the homeowner is thinking about it because their neighbour just got done or because they are packing the car themselves.
The three-fixture standard install:
- PIR floodlight over the driveway or side gate: 20W or 30W LED, 3000K to 4000K, IP65, quality PIR with adjustable lux and time settings. Not the cheap wobbly ones from the shed shops.
- Wall lantern or bulkhead at the front door: dusk-to-dawn photocell, on all night, 8W to 12W LED, warm white for kerb appeal
- Bulkhead at the back door and one at the side passage: PIR triggered, IP65, keeps the dark corners lit only when needed
Add a twin outdoor socket beside the driveway floodlight while you have the cable out and you have just turned a €180 add-on into a €350 job. The socket sells itself: Christmas lights, pressure washer, lawnmower, EV top-up cable.
🔦 Product Spotlight: Outdoor and Security Lighting
LED Floodlights: Full range from 10W up to 200W, IP65 rated, with and without PIR. The 20W and 30W PIR units are the domestic sweet spot. Slim profile, black or white housings, decent quality PIRs that do not false-trigger every time a cat walks past.
Motion Sensor Lights: Dedicated PIR fittings for eaves and gables where you want the light and the sensor built in as one unit. Cleaner install than adding a separate PIR module.
Bulkhead Lights: The workhorse of exterior lighting. IP65, LED, some with integrated PIR, some with integrated photocell. Perfect for back doors, side passages, apartment communal areas, sheds and outhouses.
Wall Lanterns and Fumagalli Lights: For customers who want the security benefit without the industrial floodlight look. Fumagalli is the premium Italian range, 10-year warranty, tempered glass, resin bodies that do not corrode. Perfect for front entrances, driveways and pillar tops.
Twin Outdoor Sockets: IP66 rated, weatherproof, the easy add-on that turns a €180 lighting job into a €350 lighting-and-power job.
Wi-Fi Time Switches: For the holiday-home customer who wants interior lights coming on at random intervals while they are away. Simple retrofit into any existing lighting circuit.

💡 Contractor Tip of the Week: Running a Summer Security Lighting Campaign
Every domestic customer you visit between now and mid-August is a security lighting prospect. Here is how to systematically turn July callouts into extra work:
- Do a 60-second exterior sweep on arrival. Before you go through the front door on any domestic job, walk around the outside. Note where the dark spots are, whether the existing floodlight (if any) works, whether the front door light comes on at dusk, and whether there is a side gate or back access with no light at all.
- Mention it in conversation, not as a pitch. When you are wrapping up the main job, say something like "I noticed your side gate is in the dark, are you happy with that or would you want a PIR on it?" Framed as a question, not a sell.
- Have a mental price list ready. "A PIR floodlight supplied and fitted is typically around €X, a bulkhead over the back door is around €Y, and if we do both together it is €Z." Round numbers, no umming.
- Offer the outdoor socket while the trench is open. If you are running cable for the floodlight, adding a twin outdoor socket on the same run is €80 to €100 of extra work for the customer and a very easy yes.
- Book it for the same week. "I can be back Thursday morning, two hours, done." Security work has emotional urgency in July. Do not let the quote go cold.
- Leave a card and mention the neighbours. "If your neighbour is going away too, same day I am here I can do theirs for a bit less because I only travel once." Simple referral trigger.
Done right, a €200 fault callout becomes a €600 morning. Repeated across a summer of domestic calls, that is real money.
