Fuels for Ireland Warns of 35c per Litre Fuel Price Rise by January
The CEO of Fuels for Ireland warned on RTÉ last week that current government policy could push petrol and diesel prices up by 35 cent per litre between now and January. The projected hike combines three moving parts: the reinstatement of the full excise duty, the return of the NORA levy from September, and a Budget night change to carbon tax. On top of that, the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation goes up on 1 January.
Where diesel sits today: Around €1.73 per litre nationally as of July. A 35c jump would push forecourt diesel toward €2.05-2.10 by New Year.
What it means for you: Van running costs, plant hire and site travel are already a heavy line item. If you're quoting Q4 commercial or fit-out work now that will be delivered in December or January, build a fuel contingency into your labour rate or add a written fuel surcharge clause. Regular commercial clients on standing rates should be given advance notice in writing that a review is coming. Better to flag it in July than argue it in November.
Brent Crude Back Through $100 on Fresh Red Sea Tanker Strikes
Brent crude touched $100 a barrel in trading last week after Houthi rebels struck oil tankers in the Red Sea. Fuels for Ireland's Kevin McPartlan told RTÉ that conditions in the Strait of Hormuz remain so volatile that wholesale prices are moving daily. This is the same story we flagged in Issue #019 when Brent bounced to $74 on a Qatari LNG strike, but the new development is that Brent has now punched through the $100 mark on repeated Red Sea incidents rather than settling back down.
The domestic heating angle: More than 700,000 Irish households, roughly 45% of the total, still rely on oil for heating. Every spike above $90 accelerates enquiry volume for heat pumps, solar PV and battery storage, particularly from homeowners who took a quote in the spring and shelved it.
What it means for you: Expect a second wave of retrofit enquiries in August as the home heating oil top-up season starts and homeowners see the wholesale price on their delivery quote. Make sure your PV-ready consumer unit stock, meter tails and Type B RCBOs are lined up before the surge, not after it.
⚖️ Compliance Update
A reminder on the SEAI EV grant threshold change we flagged in Issue #021: the maximum eligible vehicle price for the €3,500 Electric Vehicle Purchase Grant drops from €60,000 to €50,000 for applications received after 31 July 2026. That's this Friday. Applications submitted or approved before 31 July are assessed under the old €60k cap.
The €300 home charger grant is unchanged, but expect a rush of last-minute grant applications this week from homeowners squeezing in before the deadline. That translates directly to a spike in follow-on enquiries for CU upgrades, dedicated 32A radials, Type A RCBOs and earthing improvements to accommodate the new charge point. On the wider certification piece: with SEAI applications for retrofits, PV and EV all trending up, keep your test result records, cert numbers and photographs of installed equipment properly filed. SEAI audit callbacks are still running and a missing photo of the new CU label costs you a lot more time than taking one at the job.
🌿 July Domestic Renovation Season: Bathrooms, Attics and Extensions
School holidays are in full swing and family homes are half-empty for the next four weeks. That's the traditional window for the messier renovation jobs that homeowners avoid during term time: bathroom refits, attic conversions and rear extensions where the kids' bedroom needs to be off limits for a week.
The lighting brief for these jobs is different from the June kitchen wave. Bathrooms need IP-rated fittings and proper zoning, attic conversions need low-profile fittings and often a dedicated sub-circuit, and extensions want a coordinated ceiling plan across the new space and the room it opens into. Fire-rated LED downlights at 3000K warm white remain the domestic standard. Where the ceiling is being replaced anyway, upsell a perimeter cove detail with LED strip driven off a dimmable driver, or a feature pendant on a separately switched circuit above a kitchen island or dining table.
Attic conversion tip: check the manufacturer spacing rules for fire-rated downlights against your rafter centres before you commit to a layout. It's cheaper to catch it at first fix than to notch a joist after the plasterboard is up.

💡 Contractor Tip of the Week: Managing the Punch-List on Domestic Renovations
The punch-list is where domestic renovation profit gets quietly eaten alive. You've finished the job, invoice is out, and then the homeowner starts sending texts: "the downlight over the sink flickers a bit", "can you move that switch", "you never fitted the outside light we mentioned". Half of it is genuine snagging, half is scope creep, and if you don't have a system it all becomes free labour. Five steps that work:
- Do a formal walk-through the day you finish. Not a chat on the way to the van. Ten minutes with a pen and a printed room list, ticking off each fitting, switch position and function. Get the homeowner to sign the page. This alone kills about 70% of later disputes because they've already seen and approved the work.
- Separate defects from changes in writing. A flickering downlight is a defect and is on you. A request to move the switch two feet to the left is a change and gets a price. Say this out loud on the walk-through, then put it in the follow-up email.
- Give a defect deadline. Something like: "any snagging items to be notified within 14 days of completion." Fair to the customer, protects you from month-three surprises when the plasterer's chipped the switch plate.
- Bank a small final payment against the walk-through, not against "snagging". Structure your quote so the last 10% is due on sign-off of the walk-through page, not on some vague future date when the customer feels everything is perfect. Vague dates never arrive.
- Batch return visits. If you do get one or two genuine defects, don't drive out three times for three items. Tell the customer you'll be back on Friday to sort all outstanding items in one visit. Saves you two van runs and looks professional.
