SEAI Retrofit Applications Nearly Double in Q1 2026
The SEAI has confirmed that home energy upgrade applications for the first three months of 2026 came in at just under 29,000, a near-doubling year on year. Budget 2026 allocated a record €640 million to the scheme, with a target of 73,000 home energy upgrades this year.
Where the growth is: Over 7,000 applications for window and door upgrades, 1,730+ for attic insulation (up 81%), 1,000+ for cavity wall insulation (up 62%), and 350+ for heat pump installations (up 95% year on year).
What it means for you: A 95% jump in heat pump applications means a 95% jump in consumer unit upgrades, dedicated 32A radial circuits, isolators, controls wiring and DHW cylinder connections. If you are SEAI-registered, your pipeline for the second half of 2026 is materially bigger than last year. If you are not registered, the paperwork is worth doing this summer, because the domestic retrofit market is where the money is right now.
Heat Pump Grant Now Stacks to €12,500
The SEAI Heat Pump System grant has been restructured as a bundle of three separate grants totalling up to €12,500, depending on dwelling type. This includes up to €2,000 for required upgrades to central heating components such as radiators or underfloor heating, and a €4,000 Renewable Heat Bonus for homeowners replacing an existing oil, gas, solid fuel or electric storage heating system.
Crucially, the enhanced grant applies to applications already in the system that have not yet been processed. So any customer sitting on a heat pump quote from earlier this year should be told the numbers have changed in their favour.
What it means for you: The old €6,500 ceiling was often the sticking point on quotes. At €12,500, the cost objection is much weaker, and it opens up the older oil-fired rural bungalow market that was previously priced out. Refresh any pending quotes, and if you have a WhatsApp or email list of past customers who declined a heat pump on cost, ping them. The grant math has changed.
⚖️ Compliance Update
As of 1 June 2026, all major Irish electricity suppliers are now required to offer dynamic price plans. The dynamic unit rate tracks the wholesale day-ahead market price, capped at €0.50 per kWh, plus taxes and levies. Savings of up to 40% are possible for households that automate consumption, but there is real exposure to wholesale price spikes if load is not managed.
The latest Eurostat data (H2 2025) puts Irish household electricity at around 40c per kWh including taxes and levies, roughly 40% above the EU average of 29c. Ireland remains one of the most expensive electricity markets in Europe, which is what makes dynamic pricing attractive if the load can be shifted.
What it means for you: Dynamic pricing is a genuine sales driver for load-shifting hardware. Smart consumer units, hot-water diverters, battery storage, timer-controlled immersion circuits and home automation all become easier sells when the customer can see the wholesale price bouncing around on their app. WiFi time switches for immersions and pool pumps are a low-friction starting point. 🌿 July: Kitchen Renovation Season Peaks
School's out, families are away for a week or two, and the kitchen is empty. July and August are the two biggest months of the year for domestic kitchen and living room refurbs, and that means downlights, ceiling lights, under-cabinet LED strip and pendant lighting for islands.
A few things worth checking before you quote:
- Ceiling void depth. If the kitchen is on the ground floor of a two-storey, you have joist depth to play with. If it's a bungalow or attic conversion, fire-rated shallow downlights are the only option.
- Colour temperature. Homeowners are increasingly asking for 3000K warm white in kitchens rather than the 4000K neutral that was standard five years ago. Have both on the van.
- Dimming. If the customer wants dimming, spec dimmable drivers from the start. Retrofitting a dimmable circuit later is a pain.
- LED strip for under-cabinet. This is where the margin is. Quote it as part of the package, not an afterthought.

💡 Contractor Tip of the Week: Pricing Kitchen Downlight Jobs Properly
Kitchen downlight jobs look simple on paper and burn contractors on price every summer. Here's how to quote them so you actually make money.
- Site visit before quoting, always. Ceiling void, joist direction, existing wiring routes, and whether the customer wants the old points removed and made good. A phone quote on a kitchen downlight job is a guaranteed loss.
- Quote fittings and labour as separate line items. Customers shop around on fittings. If your quote is one lump sum, they think they can beat it by supplying their own lights. Separate lines let them see where the labour cost sits and stops the "I'll buy them online" conversation.
- Price in the making-good. If you're removing an old fluorescent batten or a pendant rose, you need to patch and skim the ceiling or leave that to the customer's plasterer. Say which in writing. "Making good by others" saves arguments later.
- Add under-cabinet LED strip as a €X option, not the default. Roughly 6 in 10 customers will take it if it's offered as a €250 to €400 upgrade. If you bundle it into the base price, you look expensive against the guy who didn't.
- State the colour temperature in the quote. "10 x 8W dimmable LED downlights, 3000K warm white, fire-rated." This protects you when the customer says they wanted "the yellow ones" after you've fitted cool white.
- Two-week validity on the quote. Cable, fittings and driver prices are still moving. A quote valid for six months is a quote that costs you money.
📅 Dates to Know
- 1 July 2026: Electric Ireland 8% electricity and 7.7% gas price rises take effect (covered issue #017).
- Now: Dynamic electricity tariffs mandatory across all major suppliers.
- 4 August 2026: August bank holiday Monday. Greenogue closed. Order Friday 31 July.
- End of July: SEAI expected to publish Q2 2026 retrofit data. Watch heat pump numbers.
