The Spark #017: SEAI Solar Grant Locked In and Electricity Prices Up 8% from July
Shamrock Electrical
The longest evenings of the year are here, and there is plenty to report. The SEAI rooftop solar grant has been locked in at €1,800 until 2029, giving you three years of pipeline certainty. Electric Ireland confirms an 8% electricity price hike from 1 July, which will sharpen every solar and heat pump conversation you have this summer. And oil is finally easing after the Middle East peace deal, though the cost hangover is far from over.

SEAI Solar Grant Locked In at €1,800 Until 2029
At the Solar Ireland Conference last Thursday, Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O'Brien confirmed that the SEAI rooftop solar PV grant of €1,800 will remain in place for the lifetime of the current government, out to 2029.
The numbers behind the decision tell their own story. In Q1 2026 alone, over 10,000 solar PV applications were submitted, a 65% increase year-on-year. The pipeline is enormous and the Minister has chosen to protect it rather than taper.
What it means for you: Three years of grant certainty removes the single biggest reason homeowners hesitate on solar quotes, which is fear of the grant being cut before sign-off. Expect strong demand right through the decade for consumer unit upgrades, dedicated PV circuits, isolators and microgeneration sign-offs (NC6 forms). If you are not already Safe Electric registered for solar, the commercial case for getting registered has just been extended to 2029.
Electric Ireland Raises Prices 8% from 1 July, Gas Up 7.7%
From next Wednesday, 1 July, Electric Ireland is increasing domestic electricity prices by 8% and gas by 7.7%. It is the first price rise from the supplier since October 2022. The CRU estimates the typical household will pay over €250 more per year.
Flogas, Pre-Pay Power and Yuno Energy have all followed with hikes between 8% and 10.9% on electricity, and up to 11.8% on gas. The trigger is the Middle East energy shock earlier in the year, which has fed through to wholesale prices despite the recent ceasefire.
What it means for you: Two practical points. First, every solar PV, battery and heat pump quote you put out this summer just got more attractive on payback. Use the price hike directly in your conversations with hesitant customers. Second, review your own van fuel and workshop electricity contract before 1 July. If you are on a standard variable tariff with Electric Ireland, switch before the rise hits or accept the increase on your overheads.
⚖️ Compliance Update: Middle East Peace Deal Eases Oil, But Material Costs Still Elevated
Oil prices have fallen back to around $80 per barrel after a shaky Middle East peace deal was agreed on 20 June. At the start of 2026, oil was at $60. It peaked at $118 on 31 March when the Strait of Hormuz blockade was at its worst. The current $80 level is a relief but it is not normal.
The knock-on effect on materials has been significant. Copper, PVC cable, plastics and steel containment have all carried elevated prices for four months. Wholesale pricing is starting to soften but the pipeline of stock bought at peak prices is still working its way through suppliers.
What this means for your quotes:
- Keep quote validity periods short, 14 days maximum on anything material-heavy. Materials still account for 30-40% of most rewire and commercial fit-out quotes.
- For commercial tenders running longer than 30 days, include a material price escalation clause tied to a published index, or quote labour-only with materials at cost plus margin.
- Watch Budget 2027 in October closely. When the Dáil returns in September, opposition pressure for further consumer supports, including the reintroduction of electricity credits, will be heavy. Any new retrofit grant top-ups would land in Q4 work.
The peace deal is described as shaky for a reason. Keep an eye on oil markets through July and August before assuming the worst is behind us.
🌿 Late June: Peak Outdoor Lighting Season
We are now past the solstice and into the brightest, longest evenings of the year. Sunset in Dublin is at 21:57 this week, with usable twilight running past 22:30. This is the peak window for outdoor entertaining quotes, and the peak window for getting outdoor lighting jobs specified, signed and installed before the August bank holiday.
What is moving through the trade counter at Greenogue right now:
- Fumagalli wall and bollard lights for front entrances and driveways. Italian-made, IP rated, E27 LED compatible, and the warranty range puts them ahead of cheap imports.
- Wall lanterns for traditional and period homes, particularly around south Dublin and the commuter belt where conservation rules limit fitting styles.
- LED strip lights for soffit, pergola and decking installs. The job that takes two hours and adds €400 to your invoice.
- Twin outdoor sockets with IP54 or IP66 rating. Every patio job needs at least one, and most retrofit requests come because the existing setup is a single socket with an extension lead trailing across the lawn.
If you are quoting a garden lighting package this summer, bundle the sockets in. Customers do not think to ask, and an extra outdoor socket adds margin and reduces callbacks for cable runs later.
🔦 Product Spotlight: Fumagalli Outdoor Range
The Fumagalli range is the one we recommend without hesitation for residential outdoor lighting where the customer cares about how the house looks. The fittings are manufactured in Italy from UV-stabilised techno-polymer, which means no rust, no corrosion, no painted finishes flaking after two Irish winters. They also carry standard E27 lamp holders, so the customer can swap bulbs themselves over the lifetime of the fitting without calling you back for a sealed LED replacement.

Other outdoor lighting on the website:
- Wall lanterns for traditional homes and porches
- Outdoor lights full collection
- Twin outdoor sockets IP rated for patio installs
- PIR motion sensor lights for driveways and side passages
- Bulkhead lights for sheds, garages and rear porches

💡 Contractor Tip of the Week: Selling Solar PV Now That the Grant Is Locked In
With the SEAI grant secured to 2029 and Electric Ireland prices rising 8% next week, the conversation with solar customers has shifted. Here is a five-step framework for converting more solar enquiries this summer:
- Lead with the bill increase, not the grant. Most homeowners already know about the €1,800 grant. They do not yet know their electricity bill is going up by €250+ from 1 July. Open with that. It anchors the conversation on what they will save, not what they are spending.
- Quote a realistic payback, not the best-case marketing number. For a typical 4kWp install in Dublin with no battery, payback is now around 6-7 years at the new tariffs. Show the maths on paper. Customers trust contractors who present honest numbers over salespeople who promise 4 years.
- Always quote consumer unit and isolator separately. Roughly 40% of Irish homes built before 2010 need a CU upgrade to take solar safely. Surveying for this on the first visit and quoting it as a clear line item prevents the awkward mid-job conversation about extra cost.
- Be upfront about NC6 timelines. ESB Networks NC6 sign-off can take 4-8 weeks at the moment given the volume of applications. Set the expectation at the quoting stage. Nothing kills a relationship faster than a customer thinking they will be exporting in two weeks when it will be two months.
- Offer a battery upgrade path, do not push it on day one. Most customers cannot justify a battery on first install. But wiring in a battery-ready inverter and leaving space in the consumer unit means you get the call back in 2-3 years when battery prices drop further. That repeat business is gold.
Solar is a long game now. The customers you treat honestly this summer will refer you for the next decade.
