The Spark #008: Fuel Price Relief, SEAI Boom & Garden Lighting Season

The Spark Newsletter Issue 8

Fuel prices are finally dropping after the protests ended just over a week ago. SEAI retrofit applications have surged 96% this year, creating the biggest opportunity for electrical contractors in years. And with Easter behind us and gardens coming to life, April is peak season for outdoor lighting installations. This week The Spark covers exactly how much fuel costs have come down, why the SEAI boom is only getting started, and which garden lighting products are flying off the shelves right now.

📰 Industry News

Irish petrol station forecourt showing fuel price signs with lower diesel and petrol prices in April 2026

Fuel Prices Drop 15c Per Litre Since Protests Ended

Diesel prices have fallen by an average of 15 cent per litre across Ireland since the fuel protests ended on April 14th, with pump prices now averaging €1.89 per litre compared to €2.04 during the height of the crisis. The government's €505 million support package, including additional excise duty cuts, has taken full effect at forecourts nationwide.

The breakdown: Diesel down 15c to €1.89 average. Petrol down 12c to €1.76 average. Both fuels remain roughly 20c more expensive than before the Iran war began, but the trend is clearly downward as global oil markets stabilise.

What it means for contractors: Your van running costs are finally heading in the right direction. At 15,000km per year, that 15c saving on diesel translates to roughly €150 less in annual fuel costs per van. Small relief, but every bit helps when margins are tight.

SEAI Applications Surge 96% as Grant Increases Take Effect

Modern Irish home with solar panels and heat pump installation showing SEAI retrofit upgrades in spring 2026

Home energy upgrade applications have nearly doubled in 2026, with SEAI processing 29,000 applications from January to March compared to 14,800 in the same period last year. The surge follows major grant increases that took effect in February, including heat pump grants rising from €6,500 to €12,500 for houses.

The numbers: Heat pump applications up 140%. Solar PV applications up 85%. New window and door grants attracted over 7,000 applications in their first six weeks. Average project values have increased by 35% as homeowners tackle bigger upgrades.

The opportunity: This is the biggest retrofit boom Ireland has ever seen, and it's only getting started. Every heat pump needs electrical work. Every solar installation needs a qualified electrician for grid connection. If you're not registered with SEAI contractors yet, now is the time.

⚖️ Compliance Update

Weatherproof outdoor electrical socket mounted on exterior wall of Irish home with RCD protection visible

New Outdoor Socket Installation Requirements from May 1st

New guidance from the Commission for Regulation of Utilities takes effect May 1st for outdoor socket installations in residential properties. All outdoor sockets must now be protected by a 30mA RCD, installed at least 2 metres from water features or swimming pools, and have IP55 rating minimum for exposed locations.

Key changes: Dedicated RCD protection required (shared RCDs no longer acceptable). Weatherproof enclosures mandatory for all installations. Certificate of compliance must specify IP rating and RCD test results.

Action needed: Review your outdoor socket installation procedures before May 1st. Stock up on IP55-rated sockets and dedicated RCDs. This is peak season for garden electrical work, so compliance is critical.

💡 Contractor Tip of the Week

Upselling Garden Lighting: The Right Way

April outdoor jobs are perfect opportunities to suggest additional lighting, but there's a right way and a wrong way to approach upselling. Done properly, you're genuinely helping customers get more value from their outdoor spaces.

1. Start with safety and security. Motion sensor lights and pathway lighting aren't luxury extras, they're practical improvements that prevent accidents and deter intruders. Frame it as essential, not optional.

2. Point out existing cable runs. If you're already running cable for one outdoor socket, the marginal cost of additional outlets or lights along the same route is minimal. Show customers the route and explain the savings.

3. Plan for seasonal use. Garden parties, BBQs, Christmas lights. Outdoor electrical needs change throughout the year. Install capacity now that they'll appreciate later.

4. Suggest timer controls. WiFi time switches let customers control outdoor lighting from their phones. Easy installation, impressive to customers, good margin for you.

5. Always provide options. Quote the basic job they asked for, then show what's possible with additional lighting. Let them choose, but make sure they understand what they're missing if they go basic.
