Iran War Day 32: April 6 Is the Date Every Contractor Needs to Know

Oil tankers stranded near the Strait of Hormuz as the Iran war enters day 32 and oil prices top $116 a barrel

Today is Wednesday, 1 April, day 32 of the US-Israel war on Iran. Brent crude has been trading above $116 a barrel this week, its highest point since mid-March, as the conflict shows no sign of ending quickly. Iran has rejected the US 15-point peace proposal, describing it as "largely excessive, unrealistic and unreasonable." Iran's foreign minister stated this week that Tehran is prepared for "at least six months" of war.

The date that matters most right now is Monday, 6 April. That is Trump's extended deadline on pausing strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure. He told allies this week that the US would have "nothing to do with" the Strait of Hormuz and told them to "go get your own oil." Tonight he is giving a national address on Iran. Markets are watching every word.

For Irish contractors, here is the practical picture heading into Easter weekend:

Diesel is staying high. Analysts warned this week that emergency oil reserve releases, the largest in history at 400 million barrels, will begin losing their effectiveness in early to mid-April. Once that buffer is exhausted, there are very few tools left to prevent further price increases. Ireland is already paying the highest diesel prices in the EU. Plan your April job pricing around current fuel costs at minimum, and consider that they could rise further.

Cable prices remain elevated. Copper is still trading well above historical norms. If you are pricing jobs starting in May, get your cable requirements confirmed and ordered now rather than waiting until the job begins. Call Shamrock on 01 401 9907 to confirm stock and pricing before you commit.

The renewable energy argument is now unmissable. Every week of this crisis makes solar PV, heat pumps, and energy efficiency upgrades more financially attractive to homeowners and businesses. The SEAI retrofit pipeline is already the strongest on record. Contractors positioned for this work are in front of a growing, motivated queue.

Spring Construction Pipeline: The Strongest April in Years

Away from the crisis news, the underlying construction picture in Ireland remains very strong. The government is targeting 43,000 new housing completions in 2026. ESB Networks and EirGrid have combined capital investment of over €1.6 billion approved for the current period, with eight major transmission projects beginning construction this year. Tender price inflation is running at 4 to 6%, wages in M&E are rising, and contractors in Dublin are being booked out weeks in advance.

If you are not already on the approved supplier lists for the main contractors and developers active in your area, April is a good month to make those calls. The pipeline of work for the second half of 2026 is being locked in now.

🌿 The Outdoor Season Is Here

The clocks went forward last Sunday, 30 March. The evenings are now noticeably longer and the outdoor electrical season is in full swing. This is consistently the strongest six-week window of the year for residential outdoor electrical enquiries.

The conversations worth having with residential customers right now:

Outdoor sockets. One of the most underserved requests from homeowners. A properly installed IP-rated outdoor socket opens up garden lighting, power tools, patio heaters, and outdoor entertainment without trailing cables. It is a quick clean job that leads naturally to follow-on work. Ask every residential customer this month whether they have outdoor power. Most do not. Shamrock stocks IP56-rated double outdoor sockets online.

Security floodlights. With the evenings bright again, homeowners notice gaps in their outdoor security lighting. The energy cost argument for switching from old halogen to LED floodlights writes itself right now, given where electricity prices are. Shamrock stocks a full range of LED floodlights online.

Garden and patio lighting. Wall lanterns, post lights, pathway lighting, homeowners doing garden work this spring are thinking about how it looks in the evening. The Fumagalli range is particularly popular with customers who want a quality finish that lasts in Irish weather.

💡 Contractor Tip of the Week

How to Get Google Reviews Working for Your Business

Irish electrical contractor showing a customer a Google review link on his smartphone after completing a job

Google reviews are the single most visible trust signal for any contractor business. When a homeowner or site manager searches for an electrician in your area, the first thing they see is your star rating and review count. Most contractors know this but very few have a consistent system for getting reviews. Here is one that works.

Step 1: Get your Google review link. Go to your Google Business Profile, click on the reviews section, and find the option to share your review link. It will be a short URL. Copy it and save it somewhere you can access easily on your phone.

Step 2: Ask at the right moment. The best time to ask for a review is immediately after a job is complete and the customer has expressed satisfaction. Not a week later in a text, right there on the day, while they are happy with the work. Say something like: "If you were happy with the job I would really appreciate a quick Google review, it only takes a minute and it helps the business." Most customers are happy to do it when asked directly.

Step 3: Make it easy. Text them the Google review link immediately after asking. If they have to search for your business themselves, most will not bother. A direct link takes them straight to the review form in two taps.

Step 4: Respond to every review. When someone leaves a review, good or bad, respond to it. For positive reviews, a short thank you shows you are attentive. For negative reviews, a calm professional response shows potential customers that you deal with issues properly. Reviews with no response look neglected.

Step 5: Build it into your routine. One review request per job, consistently, is far more effective than a burst of asking followed by nothing. Ten reviews a month from consistent asking beats a one-off campaign every time.

📅 Dates to Know: April 2026

  • 24 April: ZEVI EV Charging Strategy Consultation Closes. The public consultation on Ireland's Draft National EV Charging Infrastructure Strategy 2026 to 2028 closes at 5pm. Submissions at gov.ie.
