What types of outdoor security light are there?
There are four approaches, and most homes end up using two or three of them together. Pick by the position rather than by the price.

Floodlight with a built in PIR
The workhorse. One unit contains the LED panel and the passive infrared sensor, so there is a single fitting to mount and wire. It sits dark, wakes on movement, then times out. This is the right answer for a driveway, a back garden or a yard where you want light on demand and nothing on all night.

If you would rather set the timing and sensitivity from the ground instead of up a ladder, a remote controlled version of the same idea saves a lot of messing about, and it comes in four output sizes so you can match the wattage to the position.

Floodlight plus a separate sensor
Splitting the two gives you far better control. The sensor goes where it sees people arriving, at head height on a corner or beside a gate, and the light goes where you want the light. One sensor can also switch several fittings at once, so a single trigger lights the drive, the side passage and the back door together. This is how most professionally lit houses are done.

Wall lantern with a sensor
A floodlight on the front of a house looks wrong. A lantern with a sensor built in gives you the same motion triggered welcome without the industrial look, which matters on a front elevation or either side of a door.

Solar security light
Where there is no cable and no appetite for running one, a solar floodlight with a PIR does the job. Because it only fires in short bursts it copes far better than a solar light that tries to glow all night, and it stays useful through an Irish winter. Sheds, side gates and the far end of a garden are its natural home.

How bright does a security light need to be?
Brighter is not better. Too much light on a small area creates glare and deep black shadow beside it, which is worse for seeing what is actually there and worse for any camera you have. LED floodlights give roughly 100 lumens per watt, so the wattage is a fair shorthand for output. Match it to the area rather than buying the biggest one on the shelf.

On colour, 4000K natural white is the one to pick for security. Warm white flatters a garden but muddies detail, and very cold blue white is harsh and unpleasant for neighbours. Natural white shows colours close to true, which matters if you are ever trying to describe a car or a jacket to a Garda.
How to set a PIR sensor properly
A passive infrared sensor reads moving heat against a cooler background. That is why it triggers reliably on a person walking across its field and unreliably on someone walking straight at it. Almost every complaint about security lights comes down to three settings that were never adjusted after fitting.
- Time delay. How long the light stays on after the last movement. One to two minutes is plenty. Ten minutes just annoys the neighbours and wears out nothing but goodwill.
- Lux threshold. The daylight level below which the sensor is allowed to fire. Set it too high and the light triggers in the middle of the afternoon. Set it at dusk and it behaves.
- Sensitivity and range. Turn it down until it stops catching the road, the footpath and the neighbour's garden. A sensor that fires forty times a night is a sensor everybody learns to ignore.
Mount the sensor around two to two and a half metres up. Higher than that and it looks down over people's heads. Lower and every cat in the parish sets it off. Angle it so people cross its view rather than walk into it, and keep it away from anything that moves warm air, such as a vent, a flue or a washing line of laundry in the sun.
Where to put security lights around the house
Burglars want darkness and cover, not a fight with a floodlight. Light the ways in and the places somebody could work unseen, and leave the rest alone.
- The driveway and the front approach. The most used and the most visible. A sensor floodlight or a pair of sensor lanterns here does most of the deterrent work.
- The side passage. Usually the darkest and most overlooked part of an Irish semi, and the usual route to the back. A modest 10W with a sensor is enough.
- The back door and patio doors. Where most forced entries happen. Light it, and light it so you can see out rather than being dazzled from inside.
- Sheds, garages and oil tanks. Anything worth taking that sits away from the house. Solar suits these well.
- Gates and boundary gaps. The point where somebody decides whether to come in at all.
Aim every fitting down. A floodlight tilted towards the horizon throws light into the neighbours' bedrooms, wastes most of its output on the sky and blinds anyone approaching. Tilted down at the ground it lights the area you actually care about.
What IP rating do you need in Ireland?
Irish weather is the real test. The second digit of the IP number is the water rating, and for anything exposed it needs to be a 5 or better.

Near the sea, salt air is harder on a fitting than rain. Look for a corrosion resistant finish and stainless fixings, because ordinary steel screws will bleed rust down a wall within a winter.
Do you need an electrician?
For anything wired into the mains, yes. In Ireland electrical work on a domestic installation must be carried out by a Registered Electrical Contractor under the Safe Electric scheme, and you should be given a Completion Certificate when the job is finished. That covers new floodlights, new sensors and any new circuit or spur feeding them.
Solar and battery security lights are the exception. There is no mains connection, so you can mount one yourself with a drill and a ladder. That is a large part of why they suit sheds and outbuildings so well.
Common mistakes
- One giant floodlight instead of several small ones. Creates glare and black shadow. Two or three modest fittings beat one 100W cannon every time.
- Leaving the factory settings alone. Most nuisance triggering is a sensitivity dial nobody ever turned down.
- Mounting the sensor too low. Cats, foxes and wheelie bins all become news events.
- Lighting the house but not the way in. A lit wall with a dark side passage beside it is an invitation.
- Buying on wattage alone. The sensor quality decides whether you keep the light or disconnect it in a month.
- Ignoring the neighbours. A light aimed across a boundary is the fastest way to a bad relationship and a request to take it down.
