The Home Pro is the one to reach for when the charging decision should be driven by price rather than by solar, because it reads your electricity tariff directly and runs the car on the cheapest hours it can find.

Tariff aware charging

Link the charger to your electricity plan in the Ohme app and it works out when to draw power for you. Set a target state of charge and the time you need the car ready, and it spreads the charge across the cheapest hours before then. You can also cap the price per kWh you are willing to pay, in which case it simply waits if the rate climbs above your ceiling.

A screen on the unit, not just on the phone

An LCD screen and buttons on the front mean the charger can be driven without a phone, which matters when a visitor needs to plug in or the broadband is down. Connectivity is by a GSM sim built into the unit rather than your home WiFi, so it stays online at the end of a driveway where a router will not reach, and it takes firmware updates over the air.

Ohme Home Pro or Zappi GLO?

These are the two home chargers we carry and they suit different houses. The Home Pro is the one if your saving comes from your electricity tariff, or if the charge point is going somewhere your WiFi does not reach, because it runs on its own GSM sim. The Zappi GLO is the one if you have solar PV or a home battery, because it can divert surplus generation into the car instead of exporting it. The SEAI grant, in the right order

The SEAI home charger grant is worth up to 300 euro, and the order you do things in matters. SEAI will not pay for anything done before the start date on your Letter of Offer, so apply before you order. Get your installation quote first, apply for the grant, wait for the Letter of Offer, then buy the charger. Once the offer issues you have six months to complete the work and send in the Payment Request Form. The charger must be on the SEAI Smart Charger Register and the installation must be by a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor. Check the current terms on seai.ie before you commit.

Installation

An EV charge point must be installed by a registered electrical contractor and certified under I.S. 10101. The PEN fault device built into the Home Pro means an earth rod is not normally required, which keeps the job simpler on a typical Irish domestic supply, but the incoming supply still needs to be assessed on site before the unit goes in.
