Vanity Mirror vs LED Bathroom Mirror: Which One Do You Actually Need?

A vanity mirror puts light on your face from the front, which is what you need for makeup, shaving and skincare. An LED bathroom mirror is built to survive steam and splash, with a demister to keep it clear and an IP rating suited to the room. They look similar in a photograph and they are not interchangeable.

The short version: if it is going in a bathroom, buy a bathroom mirror. If it is going in a bedroom or dressing area and the job is your face, buy a vanity mirror. At Shamrock Electrical in Rathcoole, just off the N7, we stock both.

What a vanity mirror is for

A vanity mirror, often called a Hollywood mirror, has bulbs around the frame so the light comes from in front of you rather than above. That is the whole point. Overhead light casts shadows down your face, which is why makeup applied under a ceiling light so often looks wrong in daylight.

Our Hollywood LED vanity mirror has 12 dimmable bulbs, three colour settings and a USB socket, in landscape or portrait and in white or black, free standing or wall mounted. The Hollywood Pivot is the smaller version for a dressing table or a corner of a bedroom.

These belong in bedrooms, dressing rooms and salons. They are not designed for the wet zones of a bathroom.

What an LED bathroom mirror is for

A bathroom mirror lights from the edges or from behind, giving even light without hotspots, and it is built for the conditions. The features that matter are the ones you cannot see.

A demister is the one people underestimate. It is a heated pad behind the glass that keeps a patch clear while the room steams up. Without it you are wiping the mirror every morning. The M600 CCT circular mirror at 600mm and the M700 CCT rectangular mirror at 800 by 600mm both have one, along with dimmable CCT so you can shift between warm and cool light.

If storage matters as much as the mirror, the smart LED mirror cabinet lights from the top, bottom and front and hides everything behind the door.

The safety point, which is the real difference

Bathrooms are divided into zones based on distance from the bath and shower, and each zone has a minimum IP rating for anything electrical installed in it. A mirror intended for a bedroom does not carry a rating for those zones.

This is not a detail to work around. Fitting an unrated mirror in a bathroom is both a safety issue and a wiring regulations issue, and it is the reason a bathroom mirror costs what it does. Any mirror in a bathroom should be installed by a registered electrician, who will confirm the zone and the rating required for the exact position.

Which one for which room

  • Bathroom or ensuite: LED bathroom mirror with demister, correctly IP rated
  • Bedroom or dressing table: vanity mirror
  • Dressing room or walk in wardrobe: vanity mirror, or a full length mirror if you need to see an outfit
  • Salon or barbers: vanity mirror for the station, full length by the door
  • Downstairs cloakroom with no shower: either, but check the zone with your electrician
  • Hallway or bedroom, whole outfit: the LED full length 5ft mirror, floor standing or wall hung, with dimmable CCT

Colour temperature matters more than people expect

For makeup, aim for light close to daylight. Too warm and you will over apply, because everything looks softer than it will outdoors. Too cool and it looks clinical.

This is why the adjustable CCT on our mirrors is worth having rather than a gimmick. Warmer light in the evening, daylight setting when you are getting ready to go out. On the Hollywood mirror the three settings do the same job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I put a Hollywood vanity mirror in a bathroom?
A: Generally no. Vanity mirrors are designed for bedrooms and dressing areas and are not rated for the wet zones of a bathroom. Bathrooms have zones with minimum IP requirements, and a mirror for a bathroom should be built and rated for that. Ask a registered electrician about the exact position.

Q: What is the difference between a vanity mirror and an LED bathroom mirror?
A: A vanity mirror lights your face from the front with bulbs around the frame, which suits makeup and shaving, and it belongs in a bedroom or dressing area. An LED bathroom mirror lights from the edges or behind, includes a demister to stay clear in steam, and is built and rated for bathroom conditions.

Q: Is a demister on a bathroom mirror worth it?
A: Yes, and it is the feature people most often regret leaving out. A demister is a heated pad behind the glass that keeps an area clear while the room steams up, so you are not wiping the mirror after every shower.

Q: What light colour is best for applying makeup?
A: Something close to daylight. Light that is too warm makes you over apply, because everything looks softer than it will outside. Mirrors with adjustable colour temperature let you use a daylight setting for makeup and a warmer one the rest of the time.

Q: Do LED bathroom mirrors need an electrician?
A: Yes. A bathroom mirror is fixed electrical equipment in a room with zones and IP requirements, so it should be installed by a registered electrician on a properly protected circuit. A free standing vanity mirror that plugs in does not need one.

Q: What size bathroom mirror should I buy?
A: A common approach is to match the mirror roughly to the width of the vanity unit or basin below it, leaving a margin either side. A 600mm circular mirror suits a standard basin, while 800 by 600mm suits a wider vanity unit. Measure the wall space before choosing.

A: Shamrock Electrical stocks both, including Hollywood vanity mirrors in landscape and portrait, circular and rectangular LED bathroom mirrors with demisters and adjustable colour temperature, LED mirror cabinets and full length mirrors.
