Icicle lights along a gutter or a porch roof are the classic Irish Christmas display, and these connectable sets are built to sit outside for the whole season. Drops of differing length give the icicle effect rather than a flat line of light, and because the sets link together you can cover the front of a house from a single socket.

Two sizes, two whites

The 3 metre set carries 150 LEDs and suits a porch edge, a window head or a short run of gutter. The 6 metre set carries 300 LEDs and covers the front of most houses in one go. Warm white gives the softer, traditional look that sits well against brick, render and stone. Cool white is crisper with a blue tone and reads as more modern, particularly against a dark or grey frontage.

Fitting outdoors

Clip along a gutter line, a porch edge, a window head or a fence rail. Feed the run from a properly installed outdoor socket rather than a lead trailing out through a window, and keep the connections off the ground. On an Irish Christmas display it is almost never the lights that fail first, it is the plug and coupler sitting in wet. A weatherproof connection box such as the DRiBOX keeps plugs, couplers and timers dry through the winter.

Q: How many sets can I join together?
A: Enough to reach 2400 LEDs in a single run, so eight of the 300 LED sets or sixteen of the 150 LED sets. That is far more than most houses need, and it all runs from one socket.

Q: Warm white or cool white on a house?
A: Warm white is the traditional choice and flatters brick, render and stone. Cool white is brighter and bluer, and shows up strongly on a dark or grey frontage. Pick one and stay with it across the whole display, because the two do not sit well side by side.

Q: Can they be left out all season?
A: Yes, they are made for outdoor use. Protect the connections rather than the lights, keep couplers off wet ground, and put plugs and timers inside a weatherproof box.

Q: Can I put them on a timer?
A: Yes, and it is worth doing so they come on at dusk and switch off overnight without anyone having to remember. A plug in timer or a WiFi smart plug both work, and the WiFi versions can be changed from your phone.

Q: Do I need an electrician?
A: Not for the lights themselves, they simply plug in. The outdoor socket you run them from does need to be properly installed, and that is electrician work.
